Rory McIlroy holds off Tiger Woods to reach World No. 1 Spot

Rory McIlroy has won the Honda Classic with a fantastic performance and is now the new No. 1 player in golf.
Rory McIlroy was cruising to victory and just when it looked like he had no serious challenges, the ex World No.1, Tiger Woods put in a fantastic charge with a birdie eagle finish for his lowest ever final round of 62. McIlroy was able to hear the roars from the 18th green of the PGA National, and the 22-year-old made an 8-foot birdie putt, and then made three tough par saving putts through the Bear Trap to win the Honda Classic and reach the top of the World as the second youngest, after Tiger Woods, World Golf No.1.

Rory said “It was tough today, especially seeing Tiger make a charge, I knew par golf would probably be good enough. To shoot 1 under in these conditions, when you go into the round with the lead, is very nice. And I was just able to get the job done.”

Tiger Woods made two eagles in the final round and finished up two shots behind, along with Tom Gillis, who birdied the last hole for a 69. For McIlroy, who finished on 12-under 268, it was the fifth win of his career, having won the 2011 U.S. Open last summer at Congressional Golf Club. In an amazing run he has only finished outside the top five in his last 12 starts. McIlroy shared a big hug with his father, Gerry, as he walked off the 18th green. His parents have come over from Holywood to stay with him in south Florida through the Masters, where now he will start as the favourite.

It now looks like Tiger Woods could be back to his best. He was 9 shots behind going into the final round and managed to make up 7 shots finishing with a 62 for 2nd place. Ernie Els, Tigers playing partner for the last round said “To me, it was the old Tiger back, the guy that I remember,” said Ernie Els, who played alongside him. “He never missed a shot or made a bad swing.”

Well done to Rory from all of us here at www.golf-direct.co.uk. We are looking forward to the Masters!
